Tour Details

This trip is for those who want to discover the heart of Iceland, its uninhabited landscapes, unaccessible 9 months out of 12, without doing trekking or intense hiking. On the contrary, we privilege multiple smooth and short walks and enjoy looking at the nature surrounding us.

This trip will let you discover the Highlands of Iceland, along the rift emerging in Iceland where the thoughtful, the walker, the photographer will be fulfilled away from mass tourism.

You’ll visit the volcanic area of Kerlingarfjoll, literally the witch’s mountains, the geothermic area of Hveravellir with mud pools and hot springs. You’ll cross the endless desert of Kjolur and Sprengisandur where Harpa, your guide, will tell you the stories of the banned, and of the hidden people… You’ll get close to the volcano Askja and sleep at close proximity to this ice giant, the biggest glacier in Europe, the Vatnajökull. Your route ends in the East fjords after a crossing in diagonal of the country.

Thanks to the nights in huts, you’ll enjoy the silence of the highlands and you will be disconnected to all your electronics devices that get more and more intrusive in your live.

Highlights of this trip:
  • Discovery of wild places, no human tracks, no human construction nearby, this will be a true out of the path trip away from mass tourism.
  • You’ll see and feel a huge variety of landscapes, between rhyolite mountains to powerful waterfalls, from endless sandy deserts to amazing boiling ground and mud pools…

Your guide will welcome you in Reykjavik and will start with you this amazing journey across the island. We will drive to the famous and crowed Golden Circle. We will make a quick stop at the famous geysir at Geysir and continue to the Gullfoss waterfall. Once we leave behind us those two popular sites we will enter the tracks of Iceland, reserved for 4×4. We will drive across a splendid landscape of desert, surrounded by mountains and glaciers at far distance. The tracks is rocky and bumpy, the soft asphalt of civilisation is now a memory for the rest of your trip. We will get to the witch’s mountains where we will spend the night.

14th of July (D2) : Kerlingarfjöll 10 kms

We spend the whole day discovering those amazing mountains of rhyolite. Here the ground is literally boiling under our feet.  In the afternoon, we will have the chance if, to bath into a natural hot spring located 20 min away from the hut. Night at the same place.

We continue our drive along the Kjolur plateau and stop at Hveravellir, an amazing oasis where hot springs, solfatares, sulfur and mud pools explode from the ground to create a colorful place. There is again a chance to bath in this wild place. When we get to Blonduon lake we take another track less visited and drive across a beautiful valley a green heaven before getting to another desert the Sprengisandur. The name sprengja means “to ride a horse to death” and picture where we are entering. Our destination for the night is the hut of Laugafell with a natural hot spring to warm us.

16th of July (D4): Nyidalur 150 kms

Today we arrive in the heart of Iceland. We get to a very isolated place where we will find our hut for the night. The place is a little oasis in the middle of the desert. When we look around we only see sand and scories and in far distance, a mountain range and glaciers.
